Steven Cuevas covers Riverside and San Bernardino Counties for Southern California Public Radio. Steven joined SCPR in 2005, establishing its first Inland Empire news bureau. He covers all major issues and trends in the region including the economy, politics, law enforcement and the arts. Most recently Steven uncovered evidence of inmate mistreatment at the California Institution for Men in Chino. Steven’s multi-part series triggered an investigation of CIM and other state prisons by the California Office of the Inspector General.
In 2008 Steven was named radio journalist of the year by the LA Press Club. He’s won numerous other awards, including several Golden Mikes from the Radio & Television News Association, a 2006 Mark Twain Award from the Associated Press and a 2008 RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting.
Steven comes to SCPR most recently by way of Texas, where he helped establish the first public radio newsroom at KUT in Austin. A third generation San Franciscan, Steven reported for KQED's California Report for several years before migrating to Texas in 2002. Steven's radio career began in the mid-1980s as a teenage D.J. at college radio station KUSF in San Francisco. He lives in Riverside with his wife Judy, some elderly birds, a few rescued cats and several thousand books and records.
