Pasadena – Some of the most articulate literary critics on
radio today can be found on National Public Radio station KPCC.
What may surprise you is that these well-read reviewers are under
the age of twenty.
The KPCC Book Club of the Air for Young Adults celebrates its
one year anniversary this summer. The Book Club meets at 2 PM the
first Friday of every month to talk about some of the world’s
most neglected literature: novels written for middle and high school
readers. Every month, Talk of the City host Kitty Felde chooses
a classroom or library reading group to discuss the book of the
month. Books chosen are both available in paperback and in circulation
at local libraries and are selected by Felde. Students receive free
copies, courtesy of the publishing house. Teachers select three
students to come in studio to discuss the book on the air. The rest
of the group – and other listeners under age 20 – are
invited to call in to 626-793-3667. Authors listen-in to the conversation
and add their own thoughts during the last few minutes of the show.
It’s the fastest half-hour on radio!
Help us get the word out to teachers and librarians who might
tune in FM 89.3 and find a cell phone for young readers to call
in and participate!
Book Club participants have come from Pasadena, South-Central,
Long Beach, Irvine, and even Philadelphia. A special one-hour edition
of the Book Club of the Air was an L.A. Times Festival of Books
special event.

Host Kitty Felde is a well-respected veteran journalist. She’s
hosted Talk of the City the past three years. Her love of young
adult literature can be traced to her many years of shelving books
at the East Compton Branch Library.
If you’d like to participate – or if you have a suggestion
for a future KPCC Book Club of the Air selection, e-mail kfelde@kpcc.org.
