  • Environmental reporter Ilsa Setziol receives 2003 Sigma Delta Chi National Award for Radio Feature Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists
  • Entertainment reporter Rachael Myrow receives 2004 Edward R. Murrow Regional Award for Radio Writing from the Radio-TV News Directors Association
  • Debra Baer and Ilsa Setziol receive 2004 APTRA Awards

Los Angeles, April 14 - 89.3 KPCC announced today that three of its broadcast journalists have won prestigious awards for their 2003 reporting work for the station in the past months. Award-winning reports with topics as diverse as efforts to revive a river delta, movies in a graveyard and drive-thru prayer illustrate the range and excellence of KPCC’s local reporting.

Yesterday the Society of Professional Journalists announced that Ilsa Setziol, KPCC’s environmental reporter, has won the 2003 National Sigma Delta Chi Award for Excellence in Journalism for a May 2003 story that explores how US water use and policy have affected wetlands and native peoples in Baja and Sonora, Mexico. Listeners view the environment of the Colorado River Delta through the eyes of the tribal chief of the Cucapa and are taken into a marsh in search of rare birds.

The report also garnered a 2004 Associated Press Television-Radio Association of California and Nevada (APTRA) Award for Best Sound Use -Hard News earlier in the month.

Setziol responded to being honored, “I’m delighted. Environmental stories, especially those with this kind of complexity, get so little attention in broadcast media. It affirms my belief that environmental issues are not only important, but make great radio. They are rich with sound, drama and a nearly tangible sense of place.” Setziol is only one of two radio journalists dedicated to environmental reporting in all of Southern California.

Judged by other peer journalists, the Sigma Delta Chi awards have been given annually for seventy-two years. She receives her award July 9 at a banquet at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

Recently, KPCC entertainment reporter Rachael Myrow was honored with the Edward R. Murrow Award for her August 2003 report about Cinespia, a summer film series held in a Hollywood cemetery.

The Radio-Television News Directors Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow's pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.

Additionally, on April 3rd, reporter Debra Baer received a 2004 APTRA award for Best Light Feature for her May 2003 report, entitled “Drive Through Prayer”, about a drive-thru prayer booth in Orange County.

KPCC is the flagship station of Southern California Public Radio. In the past three years KPCC has won more awards for excellence in journalism than any other radio station in Southern California. KPCC is also the fastest-growing public radio station in the country, airing the signature public radio news and talk programs from NPR, along with Air Talk with Larry Mantle weekdays from 10 a.m.- 12 Noon, and Talk of the City with Kitty Felde weekdays from 2-3 p.m. Visit www.kpcc.org for more information.
