89.3 KPCC Wins Five Golden Mike Awards

Los Angeles, CA (Sun., Jan. 30, 2005) - The reporting staff at 89.3 KPCC struck gold five times with five "Golden Mike" awards from the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California at the 55th Annual Golden Mike Awards Dinner and ceremony held on January 29 at the Universal Hilton in Universal City.

Three KPCC reporters garnered the five accolades for their reporting in 2003-'04. The winning reporters were: Ilsa Setziol for Best Feature News Series and Best Individual Writing; Frank Stoltze for Best News Reporting; Stoltze and KPCC former Senior News Editor Anthea Raymond Beckler for Best Documentary; and John Rabe for Best Serious Feature.

Setziol won the Best Feature News Series award for her three-part series on different environmental issues affecting the California coast. In one report, she reveals a surprisingly rich marine life around offshore oil rigs. Another report examines the return of eelgrass to estuaries in Southern California, and the third report highlights efforts to save the dwindling steelhead trout population. Setziol also won the Best Individual Writing award for her story documenting the effort to increase the number of California sea otters.

Stoltze and Beckler won the Best Documentary award for their documentary, "California Recalled," an in-depth hour-long special on California's recall election. Stoltze also won an individual award for Best News Reporting for a report on an anti-crime community march in Boyle Heights that attracted several hundred people.

Rabe won the Best Serious Feature award for his report on Orange County's efforts to prevent an outbreak of the West Nile virus.
