KPCC Wins Nine Golden Mike Awards

Pasadena (January 23, 2006) - 89.3 KPCC has won nine Golden Mike Awards from the Radio and Television News Association (RTNA) of Southern California. The awards were presented at the 56th Golden Mike Awards at the Universal City Hilton on Saturday, January 21. The nine awards were the most amongst Division A stations (those with a full-time news staff of six or more people).

The following are KPCC's Golden Mike Award winners:

  • Best Individual Writing: Ilsa Setziol, for her piece on the Arroyo Toad.
  • Best Public Affairs Program: AirTalk, for its remote broadcast from San Francisco on the gay marriage debate.
  • Best Serious Feature: Rachael Myrow, for her report on Measure O, the Nov. 2004 L.A. bond measure to fund a massive cleanup of the city's stormwater system [listen].
  • Best Feature News Series: Rachael Myrow, for her series of reports on issues facing the LA and Long Beach ports. [listen to part: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5]
  • Best News Reporting: Frank Stoltze, for his report on the impact of the intense rains of the winter of '04-'05 [listen].
  • Best Spot News Story: John Rabe and Frank Stoltze, for their reporting on the Metrolink train derailment [listen].
  • Best Business & Consumer Reporting: This was a tie; Rachael Myrow and Rob Schmitz each won a Golden Mike. Myrow won for her report on businesses that employ illegal aliens [listen]; Schmitz won for his feature on Anaheim's relationship with Disneyland [listen].
  • Best Sports Feature Reporting: Steven Cuevas, for his story on the western regionals of the Little League playoffs.

"We are very grateful to the RTNA judges for their recognition of the work we do at KPCC," said KPCC News Director Paul Glickman. "This is a wonderful achievement for our team of reporters and their efforts to shed light on the events that affect people's lives in Southern California."
