Daily Dose: Gay Marriage, "Avatar" on DVD and snow sports

March 16, 2010 -- There's a new hitch in the gay marriage trial... The sponsors of Proposition 8 are seeking access to the internal campaign documents of gay rights groups that opposed the ban on same-sex marriage, including Equality California.

The groups want to block that request. Their lawyers told the judge today that the e-mails and memos are irrelevant because the groups aren't part of the litigation. All this could push back closing arguments, which were originally scheduled for this month.

The behemoth of the box office, "Avatar," is coming to DVD on April 22nd. That was the announcement today from Twentieth Century Fox. No, it won't be in 3D, but Fox says that a 3D version can be expected in the future, once the market for 3D televisions have taken off a bit more.

The disc won't include any special features. Producer Jon Landau said in a statement that the lack of extras was done to improve sound and picture quality. But hey - let's dream for a moment. If YOU could choose the extra features for the "Avatar" DVD what would it be?

A sad story today from the mountains... A snowboarder died at a hospital after a high-speed accident on Mammoth Mountain. Twenty-seven year old Joshua Hernandez of Mammoth Lakes was doing a trick on a rail in a terrain park when he fell and crashed into a fence on Friday. He later went into cardiac arrest at a hospital and died.

That's a pretty terrible way to go and way too young to die. But I'd like to think at least he died doing what he loved...

And speaking of doing things you love... I hit the snow today, too! Tough to believe on a day where the temperature hit the 80s, but it's true. One of the best parts of my job at KPCC is that I have my mornings free. So, today I went with a friend to Wrightwood where we snow-shoed to the top of Mt. High ski resort. By the time we came back down, it was a warm and sunny day in Pasadena.

If I had the afternoon off, I think I might have driven out to Venice to rollerskate at the beach. Can you imagine, having a day where you could play in the snow and the surf in just 24 hours? We are so lucky here in Southern California.

What would be your ideal So-Cal day?
