Daily Dose - Porn and condoms, Betty White dog, smoking ban

April 15, 2010 -- Today, the battle over whether condoms should be used in adult films continued. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation filed formal complaints with the California Labor Commission against nine adult entertainment talent agencies for not enforcing condom use during the production of porn.

Brian Chase is an attorney with the foundation. He said when talent agencies draw up contracts with models and actors, they try to release the agents from liability for STD's contracted on set. Take a listen to what he had to say:

I'm working on a big story about the issue for NPR. Hope to have it on next week. It included a very interesting trip to the headquarters of Vivid Video where I saw lots of pictures of naked folks. More on that in a later blog. ...

Speaking of getting naked, that's just what 88-year-old actress Betty White will do next week, kind of. The new Pink's hot dog stand at Universal CityWalk will name a wiener after her. The Betty White Naked Hot Dog has no toppings on it at all. Part of the profits from sales of the Naked dogs will go to support the L.A. Department of Animal Services' animal shelters.

Like I needed another reason to adore Betty White?? Oh yeah, and if you missed it - she'll be the host of "Saturday Night Live" on May 8th.

More things I like - non-smoking places. No disrespect to you smokers (I was one of you for more than a decade!), but I really am bothered by cigarette smoke, especially when it's in a beautiful natural place.

Well, now there's one fewer place to worry about second-hand smoke - state beaches and parks! Today the state Senate voted 21 to 15 in favor of a ban at smoking at state beaches and parks. Now it heads to Governor Schwarzenegger's desk. A spokesman for the guv says he has yet to take a position on the matter.

Lots of communities across the country have approved similar bans at municipal parks and beaches. But, anti-smoking groups say this would be the first time a state has banned smoking throughout its entire park system.

Finally, there will be no Daily Dose tomorrow. My apologies for that, but I'll be heading up north to San Francisco where I will be taking part in a live journalism show called Pop-Up Magazine. I'm nervous and excited - should be fun!
