Check out this video of Harry Smith, anchor of the CBS Early Show, slicing his finger with a mandoline. (warning: it's a little gruesome). The action comes at approximately the 1:30 mark.
A mandoline is a slide with an adjustable blade sticking up in the center, so that you can slice vegetables or fruits very thinly. As Harry Smith learned, it's very dangerous if you don't pay attention.
Mistakes with mandolines are common in the kitchen. My first few weeks as a prep cook, I had bandaged fingers and gloves on, because I had so many deep wounds.
Luckily we haven't had any accidents while filming our 5 Minute Meal segments. But it's early days here at the MBS. Harry, thanks for the reminder that we must stay ever vigilant when it comes to safety!
