There's only so much you can cover in an hour of the Madeleine Brand Show. But there are plenty of stories just below the radar that nonetheless brighten our days. So, we've collected some of the bizzare headlines that made us smile.
For instance, did you know that this week marks the 90th anniversary of the word "robot"? It was dreamed up by Czech playwright Karel Capek. He altered the term "robota" which translates to hard labor to come up with the now ubiquitous word for mechancial men.
Speaking of artificial people, Barbie's main squeeze Ken has found his voice... sort of. A new talking Ken doll will repeat back whatever you ask tell him to in three different registers. High pitched, normal and Barry White. Just make sure you erase all those kinky things you made him say before handing the doll back to your kids.
Genghis Khan and Kermit the Frog have something in common. They are both green. A new study claims that the famed Mongolian warlord may have helped remove nearly 700million tons of carbon from the atmosphere during his reign. Unlike today's eco-conscious leaders, Kahn did it the old fashoned way... by slaughtering millions of people:
While it may have been effective, it certainly wouldn't get him re-elected. But Genghis never cared much for what the pollsters and pundits had to say anyway.
In the conquest category, Canada is looking to land its own NFL team. It could be the Buffalo Bills, who often play in Toronto. Or it could be any other team looking for a new stadium and an eager fanbase. Of course, if that's the case Toronto would be in competition with us in Los Angeles where developers are building a stadium to draw a team too. If push comes to shove I think most teams would rather come to LA, if for no other reason than the weather.
