A San Diego-based health firm was honored as one of the nation's top 10 places to work for employees over the age of 50.
"These best employers know that recruiting and retaining 50-plus workers is smart business," said Jean Setzfand, vice president for financial security for AARP, which works to improve the quality of life for people who are 50 or older.
Scripps Health was the only California-based company to place not just in the top 10, but also in the top 50. Scripps is a $2.5 billion private non-profit health system, which includes four hospitals.
Scripps targets mature workers and retirees through senior placement agencies and career websites like retirementcommunity.com, AARP said on its website. Scripps also has a staged retirement program, that allows employees to work part-time, while still collecting full-time benefits, AARP said.
"We consider our mature, seasoned workers to be an enormous wealth of talent as they bring both education and life-long experience to health care, traits that are critical when caring for our patients," said Chris Van Gorder, the company's CEO and president.
More than one-third of Scripps employees are 50 years or older and the average tenure of those workers is 15 years at the company, according to AARP.
AARP said it chose the best employers for its list based on human resources policies and practices, including recruitment and retirement benefits. Any company with at least 50 employees could apply for the award. The applications were evaluated by an independent survey firm and a panel of judges. The award was co-sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management.
