Explaining Southern California's economy

DeBord Report on 'America Now with Andy Dean': Fiscal cliff, bad bonds in CA, and Jeff Zucker

Andy Dean Banner

Listen in to the DeBord Report, from last Friday's segment.

Every Friday, I spend a half hour bantering about business, the economy, and even sometimes politics with Andy Dean, the always lively and opinionated talk show host. Last week, we covered the fiscal cliff and whether Preisident Obama or the Congress are really serious about averting a dive over. We also discussed a hotly contested means of raising money by California school districts and why Jeff Zucker might be exactly the man that CNN deserves to not solve its problems.

We're back live again this Friday at 4PM Pacific/7PM Eastern Time. Listen up!

Last Friday's economy report on "America Now" with Andy Dean followed one day after the Vice-Presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan, so Andy and I spent the entire segment debating who won, who didn't win, whether Paul Ryan has any friends, and whether Joe Biden was incredibly rude and abrasive or...a thespian!

We're probably going to spend some time this coming Friday talking about Obama v. Romney, Part II. You can listen live here at 4PM PT. Will Mr. Obama stage a comeback? Or will Romney continue to cut into the President's increasingly slender lead?

We'll also get into some business and economy stuff. Enjoy!

Also, congratulations to Andy and his whole crew — Producer Michelle, Producer Miranda, and Engineer Kyle — for adding a whole bunch of new markets, including Orlando, the land of "100 percent humidity and 0 percent state taxes," according to Mr. Dean.

Listen in to my weekly business and economics report on "America Now" with Andy Dean. We've talked politics a decent amount in recent shows about politics, and that's how we kicked if off last week. Mitt Romney as much as admitted that he's been paying income taxes at less than 14 percent for the past five years. This shouldn't surprise anyone — Romney's "income" is really carried interest, a type of capital gains that's taxed at a lower rate than income, on assumption that it's riskier to put capital to work on investments and that risk should be rewarded.

The Obama-Biden campaign may very well stay on Romney to release tax returns, but there's probably nothing nefarious to be found. What Mitt's comments do basically show is that he's a rich guy who set up his compensation when he was at Bain Capital to be as tax-advantaged as possible. It is what it is. Some members of the financial world don't like this. Some are fine with it. But Obama/Biden should probably move on from this issue.

For whatever reason, I've been neglecting to post my Friday economy segment from "America Now with Andy Dean" on schedule on...Monday! Will fix that, but this actually provides me with a good reason to remind you, dear readers (And listeners!) that Andy and I will be talking all things business tomorrow, Friday, at 4pm PT. Listen live if you can!

Last week, we got to talk about, among other things, my deep affection for the IRS and my belief that simplifying the U.S. tax code is political misdirection and that what we really need to do is make the tax code more complex. Andy was stunned into near silence by this. Well, not really. But he did give me the chance to make my case in a context other than this blog.

We also dicussed harrassment in the workplace — the government workplace. Against men. And we took some shots at Goldman Sachs.
