LA Auto Show: Ford Fusion wins Green Car of the Year

2013 Ford Fusion Energi

The 2013 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid has won Green Car of the Year at the 2012 LA Auto Show.

A big win for Ford and the U.S. auto industry, as the number two Detroit carmaker takes the award from the Green Car Journal. It's the eighth year that the award has been given, and the first win for Ford. The 2013 Fusion beat out entries from Mazda and Dodge, the Toyota Prius C, and even another Ford entry.

What's interesting is that this year, the award went to a car that comes with several different powertrain options: gas, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid. Each delivers significant fuel efficiency, with the plug-in hybrid (Ford calls it "Energi") offering drivers the option of burning very little gas, depending on their driving habits. Ford estimates 100 mpg, based on a metric that compares plug-in electric vehicle mileage with the MPG ratings of other types of engines.

The Fusion has been in the Ford model lineup since 2006. The hybrid version arrived in 2009 and was greeting with very positive reviews from the automotive press. The plug-in hybrid is new for the 2013 model year.
