Japanese marching band brings environmental activism to Rose Parade

Their mission statement is simple and straightforward: “to increase green plants on our planet.” It’s their medium that’s unexpected: a brass band.

Established in the late ‘90s, Japan’s Green Band Association is a rotating all-star high school band that performs around the world to raise money and awareness for a wide variety of green causes and disaster relief. Locally, they’ve raised money for fire victims in Anaheim and Yorba Linda.

Created after organizer Yuzuru Kumagai was inspired by an American high school marching band at Disney Land, the Green Band will perform there twice on this visit to the West Coast, in addition to their fourth straight Rose Parade appearance on Monday (last year they paid tribute to Michael Jackson by performing his hit “Bad”). They will be 59th in the Rose Parade this year; look for the new orange uniforms.
