Fires burns 3,000 acres in Kern River Canyon

A fire broke out today in Kern River Canyon near Lake Isabella and quickly spread to over 200 acres within an hour, fire officials said. Over 3,00 acres of brush had burned by 4:00 p.m.

A U.S. Forest Service officials said the fire was 10 percent contained. 

No homes or structures were being threatened.

Recreational sites in the Lower Kern river were given evacuation orders. 

The Old Kern Canyon Road was temporarily closed, while Highway 178 remained open.
