LA Mayor Villaraigosa is recovering today from a bicycle accident, and his office said he plans to resume his regular schedule, including an appearance at a charity event this morning organized by his girlfriend.
The mayor was riding his bicycle in a bike lane on Venice Blvd about 6:15 Saturday evening when he was injured. Apparently a taxi driver pulled in front of him, causing him to hit the brakes and fall off the bike. The cab driver left the scene and couldn't be identified.
Villaraigosa underwent surgery yesterday to repair a broken right elbow at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center. A spokesperson says the mayor is expected to make a full recovery and resume a full schedule this week. He's scheduled to appear at an event today to launch his girlfriend's new charity to help animals and at-risk youth. The Lu Parker Project, created by the KTLA news reporter who's been seeing the mayor since early last year, is organizing young volunteers to repaint the lobby of the city's South LA Animal Shelter.
