SCPR's Gala: 'We Love LA' reflects & builds community

On Saturday, March 18th, Southern California Public Radio hosted 650 guests at our 2017 gala “We Love LA!” We celebrated three deserving honorees who have dedicated themselves to transforming our region: KJLH, for the station’s commitment to kindness, joy, love and happiness and to community-first connection since 1965; Jaime Jarrín, the Spanish-language voice of the Dodgers for nearly 60 years, and Steve Julian, in memoriam, the voice of Morning Edition on KPCC 89.3 for 16 years.

SCPR's special guests included Stevie Wonder, who owns KJLH; California Attorney General Xavier Becerra; Los Angeles City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson; Felicia Friesema, the widow of Steve Julian; and Glynn Washington, host of Snap Judgment.

Though the ballroom was full of hundreds of guests and a stage set for a 57-piece big band, the atmosphere was one of intimacy, created by the dedication of our family of supporters and the warmth of the tributes to our very deserving and humble honorees.

Guests were able to put faces to names as they shared a drink and dinner with 89.3 KPCC newsroom producers, reporters and hosts. Five lucky members who won a pair of tickets to the event got to dine with All Things Considered host Nick Roman.

As the program ended, the spectacular JT & Friends burst onto the stage with incredible talent, anchored by the inimitable John Tu on the drums and led through soul, salsa jazz and pop numbers by the tremendous Larry Ball. As if the star-studded program hadn’t been enough, our own Bill Davis, SCPR president, surprised us with a song!

Over $800,000 was raised from the gala to support SCPR’s exceptional news staff, a team of up-and-coming interns and apprentices and the news coverage and programming that Angelenos count on every day. As we anticipate the future of the “city of dreams,” SCPR’s commitment to local news and civil discourse will ensure that this imperfect paradise thrives for generations to come.

You can check out a slideshow of select gala photos at the top of this post.

In short, the gala was a tremendous success. Thanks to the tireless work of our gala committees, sponsors, hosts, staff and guests, we blew past our goals for attendance, fundraising and impact. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
