Democratic Senator John Kerry and newly elected Republican Senator Scott Brown formally introduced Solicitor General Elena Kagan.
Senator Kerry said Kagan's confirmation would be historic, marking the first time in history that a full third of Supreme Court would be women. Calling her "Elena," Kerry praised her knack for winning people over, offering a fresh approach when everyone else was out of ideas, her example a "tutorial in consensus building."
Senator Brown said he was honored to introduce Elena Kagan - even though he'd met her for the first time only last month. He said he'd look forward to tuning into the confirmation hearing to learn more about her. But as a lawyer himself, Brown said he recognized an impressive resume when he saw one.
Next up, Elena Kagan speaks for herself.
