Goodbye Yankees

Good for the Texas Rangers.  It'll be so nice to see someone besides the New York Yankees in the World Series.

But the Wall Street Journal sounds a cautionary note.  The paper looked at the Yankees' spending patterns after losing playoff games.  The worse the Yankees did, the more money George Steinbrenner would spend in the off season, snapping up talent whereever he could buy it.  So what?  They drive up the cost of talent, leaving many teams to fill out the lineup with the scraps.  Now that Steinbrenner has passed, it's unclear whether the Yankee management will continue the spending spree.  But it's likely.
