It's family day here on the Hill. Every member of the House is being sworn in and a third of the Senate. And most have brought their families. There are kids everywhere! Because of the strict House dress code, most look like they stepped out of a 1960's holiday TV special - black maryjanes and plaid dresses on the girls, ties in miniature boys with slicked down hair. The proceedings on the floor may be of interest to political types, but definitely not on the top ten things to do in DC list for the younger crowd. Kids were being dragged out by the handful all during the voting and speechifying. They were much more interested in the refreshments in Statuary Hall.
