Spider-Man makes his way through NYC streets during the 86th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on November 22, 2012 in New York.

The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place Thursday morning in New York City. This year featured four new balloons:

  • Papa Smurf (Yes, I was shocked he wasn’t already a balloon too):

  • Hello Kitty:

  • Elf on a Shelf (No, I don’t know what this is either):

  • Companion (A character created by New York graffiti artist KAWS):

Some of the parade’s other highlights:

McKayla actually looks impressed!

Despite controversy that led to his puppeteer resigning, Elmo made his appearance in the parade:

Along with other Sesame Street characters:

Musicians included Carly Rae Jepsen of “Call Me Maybe” fame:

Boy band the Wanted:

Don McLean of “American Pie” in front of a not-so-giant Mount Rushmore:

The Neon Trees with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

And late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon with his house band the Roots:

Whoopi Goldberg on a pirate ship:

I don’t know what this is either:

And a classic, the Spider-Man balloon the year that we just saw “The Amazing Spider-Man” Spidey movie relaunch:

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has more than 3.5 million spectators live and more than 50 million viewers, according to Macy’s.
