Black Francis (aka Frank Black), frontman of the Pixies, performs on stage at the 13th Hurricane Festival in Scheessel, northern Germany, on June 20, 2009.

Legendary alt-rock band the Pixies played a surprise show with a new line-up Friday night at the Echo, ahead of a world tour.

Stereogum reports that, in their first public performance since November 2011, played songs from their classic catalog, songs for their recently released EP alongside brand new songs.

The Pixies recently lost bassist/vocalist Kim Deal, but Kim Shattuck of the Muffs has signed on to take her place on the band’s upcoming tour.

They’ve got four more shows in L.A. scheduled, playing the El Rey on Monday through Wednesday, then playing the Mayan on Thursday night. They hit Chicago and New York City before crossing the pond to play London, then move on to the rest of Europe.
