Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio put something major on the line over the Stanley Cup: The power of song. Despite Garcetti's known love for showtunes, the singer, thanks to the L.A. Kings' victory, will be de Blasio.
If New York had won, Garcetti would have had to sing "New York, New York" on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," but instead, de Blasio has to deliver the Randy Newman classic, "I Love L.A.," on an upcoming episode of "Kimmel." Garcetti's also scheduled to appear on that episode to rub it in a little.
The mayors had previously traded barbs with quotes from their cities' songs. "Start spreading the news, it’s been over 20 years since the Stanley Cup has found its home in New York City, and we look forward to it making its way here," de Blasio said, while Garcetti took a shot with "Looks like another perfect day — for the Kings to take home the Stanley Cup. From the west side to the east side, the Kings will reign."
"We all feel tremendous pride today," Garcetti said in a statement after Friday night's series-winning game. "Our Kings of the ice were once considered underdogs. But with two Stanley Cup wins in three years, they have proved they are Kings of the game."
The losing mayor also has to buy the Kimmel audience hot dogs, but the L.A. win means de Blasio will be providing Gray's Papaya dogs as opposed to L.A.'s iconic Pink's.
California and New York's respective governors had their own bets, albeit for somewhat lower stakes. California Gov. Jerry Brown bet a box of rice cakes and a California history book, while New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo put up a basket of New York food.
Garcetti should be thankful that the Onion delivers fake news — they'd mocked the eager betting mayors, along with the city of New York, with their story, "L.A. Mayor Pledges To Eat Sackful Of New York Garbage If Kings Lose Stanley Cup."
Of course, L.A. didn't remain unscathed in the article, which ended, "Garcetti went on to say that should L.A. prevail in the finals, de Blasio must accede to the terms of the wager by choking down an entire Hawaiian BBQ Chicken pizza from California Pizza Kitchen."
