Singer Katy Perry - whose song “Firework” has become an anthem of hope for troubled and lonely kids - will be the guest of honor Sunday at a fundraising concert for The Trevor Project at the Hollywood Palladium.
The project operates telephone suicide prevention hotlines to help young gay people in crisis.
Abbe Land, who runs The Trevor Project, says its founders realized other young people needed someone to talk with in times of crisis.
"They looked to find a hotline for young people to call and there wasn’t one that specifically dealt with issues of importance to gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender youth," Land said.
She also explained why they picked pop queen Perry to honor.
"A couple of years ago when it seemed that there was a lot of focus on LGBT suicide, Katy Perry was there taking about it and singing about it in her song 'Firework' to really inspire young people to be who they are," said Land.
