Former Detroit Piston Dennis Rodman gestures while addressing the media during a press conference at The Palace before an NBA basketball game against the Chicago Bulls Friday, April 1, 2011, in Auburn Hills, Mich.
Dennis Rodman, once affectionally nicknamed "The Worm", is apparently buried in debt and may see the inside of a jail cell.
The flamboyant NBA Hall of Fame inductee owes his ex-wife, Michelle Rodman, more than $800,000 in back child support for their two elementary school-aged children, as well as over $50,000 in unpaid spousal support, according to The Daily Pilot.
Rodman is scheduled to appear Tuesday in an Orange County courtroom today for contempt of court. The author of "Bad As I Wanna Be" and "I Should Be Dead by Now" could be sentenced to 20 days in jail.
The defensive specialist's defense team has a sobering excuse for his failure to pay: he is "extremely sick" from alcohol abuse, they claim in court documents.
While he once pulled down rebounds alongside Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant and earned millions of dollars, Rodman is now being represented by lawyers who are working pro-bono because the crossdressing star is so broke he has to borrow money from among others, his finance manager Peggy Williams, the documents claim.
"… In all honesty, Dennis, although a very sweet person, is an alcoholic," Williams told the Pilot. "His sickness impacts his ability to get work. This case, especially his wife filling for divorce, has put him on a binge that I have never seen before. He is extremely hurt and extremely sick. He is often unable to obtain work because of this sickness. And his sickness is getting increasingly worse."
Williams continued, "Dennis cannot afford his own monthly expenses. If the court awards attorney fees, it is setting Dennis up to be in contempt because you cannot get blood from a turnip."
Rodman's lawyers claim Rodman has only earned $8,000 so far this year.
