It turns out the two men were doing a little target practice just after 5 p.m. near the intersection of Santiago Canyon Road and Irvine Mesa Road, at the northern edge of Limestone Canyon Regional Park. The shots drew the attention of sheriff’s deputies, however, and one of the two men decided to run for it.

Besides the helicopter, deputies also brought in police canines and conducted a several-hour manhunt, but the man was never found.

Authorities were waiting to decide whether to arrest the detained man on charges of using a firearm in a county area.
