All of the southbound lanes of the 101 Ventura Freeway between Topanga Canyon Boulevard and De Soto Avenue will be closed until about 8 a.m. due to a police investigation following a fatal shootout.

After officers pursued a vehicle being driven erratically in Northride Wednesday night around 10pm, the driver led police in a chase onto the freeway. While on the 101 the suspect swerved his car toward the median as if to make a U-turn on the freeway when he was blocked by a police cruiser. He then jumped out of the car and fled police. As he ran he appeared to be pointing or aiming at police and was shot and killed on the 101 near Canoga Avenue.

Police have yet to say if they found a weapon or if there was a weapon on the suspect. Meanwhile the 101 remains closed as police continue their investigation on the heavily traveled freeway.

Northbound lanes reopened around 2:15 a.m.

Southbound commuters are being detoured off the 101 at Ventura Blvd which is loading up with traffic. Less congested sidestreets are Burbank and Victory.
