The victim of a fatal shooting over the weekend at the Brewery Lofts in Lincoln Heights has been identified as 22-year-old Ken McRoyal, a former Carson High School and El Camino College football player who went on to play for the University of Idaho.

McRoyal was also the father of a 2-year-old girl, NBC reports. He was back in town to visit his family over the weekend, and attended a Saturday night party at the Brewery Lofts where an argument broke out, according to police. Two people were shot, McRoyal fatally.

Originally from New Orleans, McRoyal’s family moved to Southern California in 2005 as refugees of Hurricane Katrina. McRoyal first played for the Carson Colts, then went on to play at El Camino College as a wide receiver before taking up that same position at U of I.

Idaho head coach Robb Akey made a statement on McRoyal’s death released by the university. “It’s a devastating loss,” he said. “We’ve lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But more importantly, a momma lost her son today.”

The Brewery Artist Lofts, converted to housing from a Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery, is now an artist-in-residence community. McRoyal was shot about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a residence there on the 600 block of Moulton Avenue. The other victim was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call detectives of the LAPD’s Hollenback Division at (323) 342-8961. Anonymous calls may be made to (877) 527-3247.
