The Los Angeles Police Department today released video footage of a sharp-dressed thief who asked to see a pair of expensive Rolex watches, waited patiently for the items to be set before him, then grabbed them both and bolted out the door.
Police said the incident occurred at about 4:50 p.m. last Thursday, May 10 at a jewelry store at Century City Shopping Center on the 10200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. (They did not say which store, but a Tiffany & Co. is located there.)
In the footage, the man can be seen in a pressed button-down shirt, with glasses and a goatee, looking around the store as he waits for the watches to appear. Then he suddenly grabs them and bolts from the store as a security guard lunges at him.
The stolen Rolexes together are valued at $64,900, police said.
Police said the security guard tackled the thief but that “the suspect managed to break free and ran southbound through the mall and out toward Constellation Boulevard.” The guard suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, police said.
Police are asking the public’s help in catching the thief, and hope the above footage will help them develop leads. He is described as an African-American man between 23 and 26 years old, standing between 5-foot-4 and 5-foot-6 inches tall and weighing from 130 to 145 pounds.
