Sheriff's deputies cordon off the area around a Palmdale apartment complex where a boy was nearly drowned in the swimming pool on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
A Palmdale woman attempted to drown her 8-year-old son in their apartment complex swimming pool, authorities said, and might have succeeded had neighbors not come to the rescue.
Deputies from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Palmdale Station said the incident happened yesterday evening at about 7:30 p.m. at Monte Vista Apartments on the 2500 block of East Olive Drive.
According to witnesses, the woman, identified as 33-year-old Allaire McDougall, was ranting about the end of the world as she pushed her son’s head under the water.
“She’s telling him, ‘Son, you have to go,’” said witness Susan Williams, according to NBC. “He’s saying, ‘No momma, I don’t want to die.’”
That’s when bystanders jumped in and rescued the boy, sheriff’s Deputy Guillermina Saldaña told the L.A. Times.
McDougall was arrested -- kicking and screaming, according to the Times -- and is being held on $1 million bail.
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Thursday’s incident is oddly similar to one that occurred in April, when a stepfather allegedly tried to hold his 7-year-old stepson’s head underwater in their Palmdale apartment complex swimming pool because, deputies said, he wasn’t learning his swim lessons fast enough.
