A Hesperia mom is in jail after her 15-month-old boy suffered chemical burns to his face and body.

A Hesperia mom is in jail following an incident in which her 15-month-old boy suffered chemical burns to his face and body, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says.

The child’s mother took him to Desert Valley Hospital on Monday afternoon with first- and second-degree burns to his face, torso and legs, the San Bernardino Sun reports. His mother, 22-year-old Ashley Donat of Hesperia, said the boy had poured a caustic chemical on himself.

It was unclear whether, or why, authorities doubted Donat’s version of events -- but the boy, whose name is Conner, was taken from her and given to Child Family Services, and Donat arrested and taken to West Valley Detention Center, where she is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, the Sun reports.

According to a sheriff’s department news release, Donat picked her child up from a family member’s care on Saturday. It was unclear exactly when the incident with the caustic chemical occurred.
