Today is Friday, June 29, and here is what's happening in Los Angeles:
The Metro board agreed to ask voters to extend Measure R to pay for public transportation projects throughout Los Angeles County, reports the Daily News. The sales tax extension will be on the November ballot. Los Angeles County Supervisors Mike Antonovich, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Don Knabe voted against placing the issue back on the ballot.
The Department of Water and Power is in a fight with the community of Mammoth Lakes over control of the ski town's main source of water, according to the Los Angeles Times. DWP officials say the utility owns Mammoth Creek and the town has been poaching water for decades. However, Mammoth city officials say a legal fight over the water would be financial ruin for the town.
The LAUSD Board of Education approved a $6 billion budget that cuts adult education and teachers while maintaining outdoor education and after-school programs, reports KPCC. If voters do not approve Gov. Jerry Brown’s tax initiative in November, the school district will have to cut an additional $264 million from the budget. "We simply have to get that passed so we can have a school year," said Superintendent John Deasy.
