Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and longtime girlfriend Lu Parker have split up, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The couple split May 25, according to a publicist for Parker, a special assignment reporter for KTLA. A spokesman for the mayor’s office said there was no comment on the breakup.
Villaraigosa and Parker began dating in 2009. That was after he ended an affair with Telemundo anchor Mirthala Salinas. It was that relationship that prompted the mayor and his wife to separate. Corina Villaraigosa filed for divorce in 2007, and the marriage officially ended in 2010.
Speaking to an audience at Loyola Marymount University last week, the mayor said the biggest regret of his time in office is the way he handled the end of his marriage. In an interview with KPCC following the event, Villaraigosa said that while he was not successful, he believes it is possible to be a politician and a family man.
"I think there are a lot of people who have done that a lot better than me. My staff would like me not to answer those questions, but I do it anyway because I think it’s important to be real, and I do think that was the one thing that I looked at and I just didn’t do it right," Villaraigosa said.
The mayor is scheduled to appear on MSNBC tomorrow morning to talk about transportation, immigration and health care.
