UPDATE: EB 60 at 605 -- All lanes now open.— CHP Southern Div. (@CHPsouthern) September 10, 2012
Transportation officials have closed the eastbound Pomona Freeway in the City of Industry over concerns about possible explosive canisters.
Traffic is backed up for miles and officials are diverting drivers to the 605 Freeway.
California Highway Patrol officer Vince Ramirez explained what happened.
“At approximately 11:26 am we received calls of a canister, possibly oxygen or helium tank, that was dropped on the Eastbound 60 just past the 605 Freeway. When our units arrived at the scene, they determined that the container was not stable so they immediately began shutting down lanes of the eastbound 60.”
Ramirez said authorities are treating the incident as a hazardous spill. He added that the eastbound 60 will remain closed until further notice.
“We ask motorist to be patient. This may go right into the afternoon commute… so we ask them to plan ahead and take alternate routes.”
The westbound side is open - but traffic in that direction is slow, too.
