Forbes, the authority on all things hip, named Los Angeles' Silver Lake enclave the Best Hipster Neighborhood in the country. Shhh. If you listen carefully, you can hear a lone, enthusiastic voice shout from beneath the malaise, "In your face, Williamsburg."

The Eastsider L.A. spoke up for the left out communities, noting, "Apparently there was no room on that list for either Echo Park or Highland Park." Then, appropriately reinforcing the business magazine's findings, pointed out that "when it came to illustrate Silver Lake’s hipness, Forbes used an interior shot of Rudy’s Barbershop, which is in Los Feliz."

CALCULATING "HIPSTERDOM"

For this list, assessing where "hipsterdom is most likely to flourish" was researched with the help of Nextdoor.com. In determining the Top 20, they looked at:

  • Data on more than 250 neighborhoods
  • Walkability (via Walkscore.com)
  • The number of neighborhood coffee shops per capita (with some help from NPD Group’s report)
  • The assortment of local food trucks (and their ranking according to Zagat’s)
  • The number and frequency of farmers markets
  • The selection of locally owned bars and restaurants
  • The percentage of residents who work in artistic occupations
  • Nextdoor.com surveys
  • Nextdoor.com "Hipness Index" (based on how often associated keywords — ie: art, gallery, designer, musician — appeared on specific site pages)

WHY SILVER LAKE IS #1

 Via Forbes:

Nestled between Echo Park and Los Feliz, the trendy community boasts some of the nation’s most lauded food trucks and farmers markets, a multicultural blend of residents with eclectic professions, and a booming arts scene. Even the buildings exude an avant garde aesthetic a hipster could love: Silver Lake is home to some of the most celebrated modernist architecture in the country, including Richard Neutra’s VDL Research House and John Lautner’s Silvertop.
