Green Day frontman to rehab after guitar-smashing meltdown

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstong sacrificed the final minute of "Basket Case" in favor of a profanity-riddled, guitar-smashing meltdown on stage at the iHeart Radio Festival in Las Vegas on Friday. He will now be seeking treatment for substance abuse.

Armstrong's 37-expletives-in-under-2:00 freakout (the NSFW video is below) seemed to be set-off by the countdown clock which notified the band that it was time to wrap up. In a statement posted on Facebook, Green Day apologized "to those they offended" and said their set was not cut short by Clear Channel.

Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.

Green Day is due to release "Uno" on Tuesday, their first album in three years, and also the first in a forthcoming trilogy of new records. They are also set to kick off a nationwide tour this fall.

The L.A. Times notes, interestingly, that until the rehab annoucement, "Armstrong's tirade had been viewed as little more than a bit of ol'-fashioned punk rock theater. For those looking for some signs of life amid Green Day's corporate partnerships and lighter sound, it may have even been welcome."

The Grammy winning band cancelled a 106.7 KROQ radio performance on Monday in Los Angeles. A number of L.A.-based talk shows may also be postponed. It was unknown if Armstrong's role on NBC's "The Voice," would be affected. Earlier this month, the band was forced to cancel a show in Italy when Armstrong was taken to a hospital for an undisclosed illness.
