A construction worker on the 405 Freeway has been crushed to death by a 3,000-pound steel beam that was being unloaded from a truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Sgt. Joe Zizi said the accident happened about 2:30 a.m. Thursday on the southbound Santa Monica Boulevard exit.
The offramp is part of a 10-mile freeway widening project. The work has forced two weekend closures that became known as Carmageddon I and II.
Zizi said the offramp was closed. It was due to reopen at 7 a.m., but that will be delayed and could cause backups on the freeway during the morning commute.
The victim was a middle-aged man, but his name is being withheld until relatives can be notified, the sergeant said.
Zizi said 10 to 15 co-workers witnessed the accident, but no one else was hurt.
Cal-OSHA officials were called to the location.
