Autopsy results of an 89-year old man who died Saturday could lead to more serious charges against a suspect who allegedly assaulted the elderly man on a bus last month.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department is waiting to find out the cause of death ofthe man who died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. An autopsy has been scheduled. The victim’s name has not been released.

Authorities arrested Luke Schoedel, 35, on Oct. 21 for felony assault and felony elder abuse after the suspect allegedly struck the man on a Metro bus in Culver City near the intersection of Venice Blvd. and Main St.  Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said he couldn’t offer more details on how the suspect attacked the an elderly man.

“We expect the autopsy to be completed later this week and we'll learn then the cause of death,” he said.

Whitmore said the elderly man declined medical attention at scene in October, but later went to see his doctor and eventually checked himself in to the hospital where he died Saturday morning. He said it’s not clear yet whether the man had pre-exiting medical conditions that contributed to his death.

Whitmore said he doesn’t believe the suspect or the victim knew each other. The suspect has been held in county jail on $80,000 bail since incident happened. His court date has been scheduled for Dec. 12. That could change if the autopsy report indicates that the assault had deadly influence on the elderly man’s state of health.
