DUI suspect accused of killing pedestrian in Torrance charged with murder

NBC LA footage of officials on the scene where a DUI suspect was stopped after hitting a Torrance man with her car.

A substance abuse counselor accused of drunk driving over the Thanksgiving weekend was charged Tuesday with murder for allegedly running over and killing a pedestrian.

Sherri Wilkins, 51, was arrested late Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence and manslaughter, authorities said. She is accused of hitting a pedestrian in Torrance and driving more than two miles with the dying man stuck to her windshield, police previously said.

Phillip Moreno, 31, was crossing Torrance Boulevard near Madrid Avenue when he was struck. Wilkins kept driving for more than two miles with the man on the hood of the car, until witnesses persuaded her to stop near Crenshaw Boulevard and 182nd Street, police previously said.

Moreno was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wilkins blood-alcohol level measured at nearly twice the legal limit for driving, police said.
