An appeals court has ruled the Los Angeles City Council violated existing laws when they approved a deal to allow digital billboards to be installed in Hollywood and other Los Angeles neighborhoods.
The three-judge panel ordered the removal of the digital billboards, the Los Angeles Times reports, which have drawn protest from neighborhood activists.
They say the brightly-lit ads for movies and products create blight and allow intrusive light into their yards and homes.
The lawsuit was brought by Summit Media, a sign company that argued the council had given a sweetheart deal to two other sign companies, CBS and Clear Channel Outdoor.
Clear Channel Outdoor operates 79 of the roughly 100 signs at issue in the case, CBS operates the rest.
