Los Angeles police have shot and killed a man they say held his two children hostage for 10 hours in a Baldwin Hills home.

Police say the youngsters, ages 3 and 6, were rescued unharmed when the SWAT team burst into the home just after 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Officer Cleon Joseph tells City News Service that officers went to the home Tuesday night and were met outside by the man's ex-girlfriend, who said he'd hit her.

Police say a SWAT team was called when the 28-year-old man said he was armed.

Officers entered the home after hours of negotiations failed to convince the man to free the children.
