UPDATE: Woman sleeping on bench set on fire in Los Angeles

UPDATE 12:56 p.m.: LAPD has made public the name of the man accused of setting a woman on fire who was sleeping on a bench.

Dennis Petillo was arrested early Thursday and booked for investigation of attempted murder. The 24-year-old is being held on $500,000 bail.

PREVIOUSLY: Police have arrested a man for allegedly setting a 67-year-old woman on fire who was sleeping on a Los Angeles bus stop bench.

Authorities said the man, who is in his 20s, was arrested early Thursday. His name has not been made public.

LAPD said the attack occurred at about 1 a.m. outside a Walgreens drug store near Van Nuys Boulevard and Sherman Way.

A witness said he saw a man come out of the store and pour something on the woman – who had been sleeping on a bench – before striking a match and setting her ablaze, according to NBC LA.

The woman, who may be homeless, was taken to a hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Last week, a 55-year-old man was set on fire as he slept outside a donut shop in southern Los Angeles County. No one has been arrested.
