Parents leave a staging area after being reunited with their children following a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.

Crossroads of the West Gun Shows comes to Ontario this weekend — and business is expected to be strong.

Bob Templeton, the company’s owner, said attendance at other recent shows has jumped 50 percent. He thinks that’s because some are worried that gun rights will soon be restricted because of the Newtown school shooting.

He said that the answer to tragedies like Newtown is to prevent the wrong people from having access to firearms.

“This is a complex issue. We have to address mental issues here, we have to strengthen our laws to screen people out who should not own firearms. We have to provide additional security. I mean it’s obviously a very complex issue that needs to be addressed broadly in lots of different areas," Templeton said.

California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, including a ban on assault rifles and high capacity magazines.

Also, gun shows in California must follow the same background check procedures as gun stores, including 10-day waiting periods.
