A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana early Friday morning.

He had been sitting in the backseat of a white car when two officers on patrol approached him on North Maxine Street, said Anthony Bertagna, a corporal with the Santa Ana Police Department.

"As the officers attempted to contact him, he got behind the wheel and put the car in drive and drove the vehicle toward the officers,” Bertagna said.

That’s when at least one officer opened fire and the man died at the scene.

Bertagna said he didn’t know whether the man was armed, whether he was alone in the car or whether there was evidence the man had broken in or was attempting to steal the vehicle, according to NBC LA.

It was the second officer-involved shooting in Santa Ana in 2013, Bertagna said.
