Suspect pulled shotgun from suitcase in Metro bus killing, says D.A.

The scene in West Hollywood on Sunday after a bus driver was shot by a passenger. On Tuesday, Anthony Craig Chambers, 41, was charged with special circumstance murder.

The L.A. County District Attorney filed charges Tuesday against 41-year-old suspect Anthony Craig Chambers for the fatal shooting of 51-year-old Metro bus driver Alan Thomas.

Thomas had just steered the bus onto Santa Monica Boulevard out of a layover area at La Cienega Boulevard when he was attacked on Sunday morning.

Shortly after boarding around 9 a.m., the defendant allegedly pulled a shotgun from a suitcase, approached the victim and shot him twice, according to the D.A.'s news release.

Chambers was arrested near the scene. Thomas was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center where he died around 9:30 a.m.

For lying in wait, Chambers was charged Tuesday with special circumstance murder. He was also charged with murder of transportation personnel, and there was a special allegation of personal use of a firearm.

The scene in West Hollywood on Sunday after a bus driver was shot by a passenger. On Monday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Anthony Craig Chambers, 41, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Authorities have a suspect name but no motive for the fatal shooting of a bus driver in West Hollywood over the weekend.

LA County sheriff's investigators have identified 41-year-old Anthony Chambers of Los Angeles as a suspect in the Sunday morning shooting.

Chambers was booked for investigation of murder and is being held Monday on $1 million bail. Authorities believe Chambers and the bus driver were the only people on the Metro bus at the time of the shooting. The victim was reportedly hit in the torso.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Chambers climb out of a bus window and run down the street. He was reportedly arrested soon after.

The driver was identified Monday as 51-year-old Alan Thomas, a five-year veteran, according to the L.A. Times.

Thomas had just steered the bus onto Santa Monica Boulevard out of a layover area at La Cienega Boulevard when he was attacked, said Metro spokesperson Marc Littman, NBC LA reports.
