Villaraigosa names interim general manager for Los Angeles Convention Center

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa appointed an interim general manager of the Los Angeles Convention Center today.

The former executive officer and chief operating officer for the Los Angeles Convention Center has been appointed interim general manager of the city asset.

Phillip Hill has already been serving as the acting general manager. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa made his appointment in a letter to city department heads. Before joining the Convention Center, Hill was executive director of the Quality and Productivity Commission.

“I am confident that Mr. Hill possesses the experience, leadership qualities and enthusiasm necessary to successfully lead the department,” the mayor wrote.

Hill is co-chair of the South Park Business Improvement and Community Benefit District.

The Convention Center’s previous general manager, Pouria Abbassi, left last month to take a job at Phoneix House.

Convention Center's general manager resigns, takes job at Phoenix House

The general manager of the Convention Center resigned today to take a management position at Phoenix House. The future of the Convention Center has played a major role in AEG's plans for a football stadium in downtown Los Angeles.

The general manager of the Los Angeles Convention Center announced today he is leaving his post to become a top manager at a national organization dedicated to substance abuse and addiction treatments.

Pouria Abbassi has led the Convention Center since 2006. Before that, he was an assistant general manager and chief operating officer for the Convention Center.

“I thank Pouria for his years of service to the people of Los Angeles and for so well representing our great city before a local, national, and international audience,” Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said in a statement.

Abbassi will be a senior vice president and California director of Phoenix House. As for the future of the Convention Center, the mayor’s office said it will work with Abbassi to find a new general manager.

Abbassi’s exit comes at an uncertain time for the Convention Center, which has played a major role in the Anschutz Entertainment Group’s plan to build a football stadium in downtown. AEG’s proposal calls for the demolition of the West Hall. New convention space, tentatively called Pico Hall, would be built next to the existing South Hall.
