Authorities were mobilized early this morning in a search for a former NFL wide receiver who had gone missing in the Simi Valley area -- but who happily turned up later in the day.
Erik Affholter, who played for USC before going to the Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers, was reported missing Sunday night by his girlfriend when he failed to return from a hike in the hills near Simi Valley.
The L.A. Times reported on the search-and-rescue operation this morning, saying that Affholter was dropped off by his girlfriend at about 10 a.m. Sunday at a trailhead near the Metrolink parking lot on Los Angeles Avenue. He never returned, and crews went looking for him last night.
But later today, the Associated Press announced that authorities had called off the search after learning that he contacted his ex-wife and mother by telephone.
