Broken water main makes a splash in South LA intersection, disrupts water service

A water main break flooded the intersection at W. 59th Street and S. Hoover Street on Friday, May 25, 2012.

It was a surprisingly wet morning in South L.A. today following a water main break that flooded an intersection and left several residents with just a dribble coming out of their taps.

The burst pipe at 59th and Hoover streets was reported just after 6 a.m. this morning, according to NBC, and flooded a square block or so spreading out from that intersection.

Department of Water and Power crews were on site and working to fix the problem. They said the burst pipe was a 4-inch cast iron water main installed in 1924, NBC reported.

About 50 water customers in the neighborhood south of Vermont Harbor had very little water pressure, according to DWP. No damage to property was reported.

The intersection remained closed two hours after the incident.
