Catalina Island golf course in 2009
Crime doesn't play? A former golf pro, who was thrown in jail in 2011 after pleading guilty to stealing, among other things, former Dodger Jimmy Campanis' 1988 World Series Championship ring, allegedly went on a golf outing with his jailor -- on approval from Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca.
The L.A. Times is reporting that after Frank Jose Carrillo was transferred from Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles to the relatively quaint jail on Catalina Island, he floated the idea to the top Avalon sheriff that he could help him with his golf game. Jeff Donahue, the Los Angeles County sheriff’s captain of the island went for it, and the outing was allegedly approved by Baca as "rec time."
When Willian Cordero, a deputy at the island station, complained about the forbidden round of golf, he was transferred back to the mainland.
