A patient at an assisted living facility in Pasadena confessed to murdering a fellow patient at the facility who was apparently strangled to death yesterday, police said.

The body of 61-year-old George Shatford was discovered Monday night at the Pasadena Residential Care Center, a facility on North Garfield Avenue that houses and cares for people who are unable to care for themselves. Another patient, 38-year-old Paul Lopez, was subsequently arrested after approaching police and admitting to the murder, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

Pasadena police Lt. Phlunte Riddle told reporters that investigators noticed marks around Shatford’s neck, but he would not state a cause of death until the coroner’s investigation was complete.

A possible motive was not known. Lopez remains in jail on $1 million bail.
