Pico Rivera high school teacher, council member admits to smacking unmotivated student

Greg Salcido

A high school teacher in Pico Rivera -- who also happens to be a city councilman there -- says he doesn’t regret smacking a 15-year-old student upside his head, although he denies allegations that he teased and bullied the boy.

KTLA reporters spoke with Greg Salcido, a teacher at El Rancho High School who has sat on the Pico Rivera City Council since 1999. Although he admitted to hitting the boy in class Monday to wake him up, he says, “I did not hurt him and I did not intend to hurt him.”

But the student, whose name is David, has leveled other accusations against his history teacher: He says Salcido makes cruel remarks at his expense, such as calling him “Chaz Bono” because of his weight and appearance.

Salcido told KTLA those accusations are an “out and out lie.” The district put him on paid administrative leave Wednesday, according to the Pasadena Star-News.
